Accentuating the Positive: A Mindset Shift for Joy & Resilience

The mind has a negativity bias and it naturally clings to unpleasant experiences in order to “brace” us and protect us from danger. By actively seeking out moments of joy, we encourage the brain to shift that bias. As the saying goes, "what we put our attention on grows"—if we look for pleasant experiences, we will find them.

We can start our day with the intention of finding good things; be hunters on the lookout for something that brings us happiness. When we notice anything that makes us happy—whether it’s making it through a green light or calling an old friend—we should fully take in the moment.

Let's work to bring intentional mindfulness to the positive moments of our day. One effective way to do so, is by using affirmations. Asserting and repeating positive statements shift the mind into creating joyful moments. The key is believing what we assert. If any one affirmation does not resonate, we can create our own statements.
